Camp Douglas – Summer Director 2025 Contract Full Time

Camp Douglas is looking for a Summer Director to lead our onsite camping ministry in July and August of 2025, overseeing daily operations and fostering a welcoming, faith-based environment. The campsite itself is located in Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast of BC, is owned by the Presbytery of Westminster, and lies within the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands and waters of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and the shíshálh (Sechelt) Nation.

The Position

The Summer Director will reside on the Camp Douglas campsite (Roberts Creek, BC) from June 26 to August 25, 2025, actively lead the team through the daily schedule (Friday-Sunday), and remain on-call overnight and on weekends when minors are on-site.

This role also includes 14 flexible preparation days prior to June 26, during which the director will participate in staff training, engage with the summer team, and host events such as the Parents’ Q&A evening. In addition, the director will prepare a report for the Camp Committee and Presbytery in September 2025, summarizing the summer operations.

Camp Douglas

Camp Douglas was founded in 1949, is a registered charity, and one of the specialised ministries of the Presbytery of Westminster.
The purpose of Camp Douglas is to invite children, young people, and young adults into a personal exploration of the Christian faith, through play-based, child-led, relational children’s ministry.

Camp Douglas seeks to provide:

+ Key Information

Term position: June 26-August 25 (inclusive) + 14 preparation days.
Salary: $225-$250 per day
Vacation: 4% vacation pay provided; unpaid days off from July 26-July 31 inclusive.
Essential Requirements:

• 25 years of age or older.
• Full BC driver’s license.
• Clear Criminal Record Check.

Other: Accommodation and meals provided on-site during the camping season. Remuneration distributed twice monthly upon submission of a timesheet.

 + Overview of Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Ministry
   1. Supervise and support the summer staff team, providing ongoing encouragement and pastoral care.
   2. Lead and direct staff training, including orientation week, team devotions, and regular prayer times.
   3. Foster a motivated, cooperative, loving, and faith-centered camp community.
   4. Model relational ministry for the staff team by engaging with campers on a day-to-day basis.
   5. Maintain open communication with the camp staff and the Camp Douglas Committee.
   6. Ensure that all staff/volunteers carry out duties per camp policy.
   7. Ensure proper discipline procedures for staff and volunteers are followed with fairness and compassion
2. Operations & Logistics
   1. Ensure safety procedures are followed and BCCA accreditation requirements are met.
   2. Oversee pre-season setup, including site safety checks, AC installation, key distribution, and ensuring necessary supplies (office, cleaning, tuck) are onsite.
   3. Coordinate logistics for transportation, including ferry reservations, luggage van, and ICBC requirements.
   4. Lead ongoing camp operations, such as assigning staff and volunteer roles, and approving cabin lists.
   5. Respond to arising matters, such as running errands/purchasing as needed, interactions with community members/neighbours, wildlife or inclement weather response, and parent communications.
   6. Ensure weekly emergency drills are conducted.
3. Camper & Staff Support
   1. Lead the response to all non-routine camper needs (e.g., discipline, medical emergencies, or child protection issues).
   2. Mediate conflict among staff/volunteers as needed.
   3. Mentor staff and volunteers in their responsibilities and personal development.
   4. Monitor camper and staff birthdays, and distribute weekly awards.
   5. Support chaplains and staff with reimbursements and general well-being.
   6. Be on call (radio on loud) overnight and during weekends to respond to any emergencies that arise on-site.
4. Administrative & Cleanup Tasks
   1. Communicate regularly with families, checking emails and managing the phone daily.
   2. Manage staff and volunteer paperwork, including contracts, CRCs, TD1 forms, and payment info.
   3. Oversee honorariums, payroll, and staff/volunteer thank-you acknowledgments (e.g., cards, T-shirts).
   4. Create weekly promotional videos and manage camp communication (emails, tuck orders, etc.).
   5. Plan and lead end-of-season cleanup, including assigning tasks, recruiting volunteers, managing Lost and Found and organizing food donations.
5. Pre-Summer Tasks
   1. Plan worship and staff contribution for Presbytery Commissioning.
   2. Host a parents’ Question and Answer session with the Camp Administrator.
   3. Oversee Alumni Camp – both pre-season organisation and onsite leadership.
   4. Ensure that orientation and training during training week includes instruction for all staff in the following areas:
      1. The Leading with Care policy of the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
      2. The Policy of The Presbyterian Church in Canada for Dealing with Sexual Abuse and Sexual Harassment.
      3. Health and safety procedures such as universal precautions, water safety, kitchen rules, archery safety.
      4. Weekly emergency drills for fire, missing camper, stranger/wild animal on property, or other emergencies.
      5. Common characteristics and developmental stages of children and youth.
      6. Bible study / worship preparation.
      7. Camp Douglas Policy Manual.
      8. Property and activity orientations.

• Strong management skills, including conflict resolution, discussion facilitation, pastoral care, and effective communication (written and verbal).
• A passion for nurturing children and youth in their relationship with Christ and their personal identity development.
• A passion for nurturing young adults in their relationship with Christ and their ministry and leadership skills.
• Experience in leadership and administration in camping or a related field (2+ years preferred).
