Director of Development   

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Development is a senior leadership position and is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy that supports the strategic plan of Himalayan Life. This permanent full-time position requires an experienced fundraising team leader with major gift and annual giving experience, strong interpersonal skills and an openness to explore new and innovative revenue-generating ideas. Fostering and developing key relationships with donors, staff members, Boards and volunteers is a key component of this role.

The Director of Development will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a $1,000,000+ budget through the solicitation of major gifts, government and foundation grants, special events, and corporate and church support. They will expand and diversify Himalayan Life’s donor base and work closely with other team members and volunteers to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the Director of Development will work closely with the Board of Directors and support board members in their fundraising roles. It is expected that the amount raised by Himalayan Life will increase in future years as the Director of Development systematically and effectively strengthens the organization’s overall fundraising capacity.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Fundraising:

• Develop a comprehensive development strategy for the organization, and be in the lead for its implementation.
• Support and partner with the CEO and board members on all major fundraising initiatives.
• Strategize and execute all fundraising events and campaigns including galas, peer-to-peer campaigns, film festivals, major donor meetings, etc.
• Oversee and support all grant writing and foundation relationship cultivation.
• Identify, develop, and mentor the Development Team including volunteers, contractors, board, and staff.

  Donor Stewardship:

• Strategize and execute new donor engagement initiatives.
• Monitor all donor information; provide and present analysis to the board and CEO.
• Take lead on donor stewardship activities including donor meetings and phone calls.
• Actively work with the CEO and board members to develop and implement a comprehensive development engagement strategy to include churches, corporations, foundations, government grants, etc.
• Work alongside the CEO helping lead major donor vision trips to Nepal. The role will require two to three trips a year to Nepal.

  Finance:

• Collaborate with the CEO and treasurer to develop and implement Himalayan Life’s financial strategy.
• Assist CEO with managing Cash Flow of organization.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

• University graduate with 10-plus years of professional, non-profit experience.
• Demonstrated success in a development function including managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources.
• Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time.
• Demonstrated experience in leading and managing teams.

  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Excellent understanding of comprehensive fundraising functions.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Strategic thinking and proven analytical skills.
• Ability to influence and engage diverse donors and build long-term relationships.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives and organizational development.
• Ability to work both independently without close oversight, and also as a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside Himalayan Life.
• A professional and resourceful style; able to manage competing priorities, complex situations and deadlines.
• High energy and passion for Himalayan Life’s mission are essential.
