Pilgrim Church is hiring a part-time Worship Leader/Director for a one-year fixed term to lead congregational worship two Sundays a month and coordinate our worship teams through Planning Center. The role is 20 paid hours a month at $27.85/hour, with additional paid hours for three special services. It covers a season in which one of our worship leaders is on parental leave.
Purpose of the role
The Worship Leader helps a multigenerational congregation sing its faith together. The task is pastoral before it is musical: the songs carry the congregation into the liturgy that follows, through creed, confession of sin, intercession for the world and community, the Lord’s Prayer, the sermon, communion and the blessing.
Term
This is a one-year, fixed-term, part-time employment position. It is created to cover a parental leave and will end at the end date unless the church and the Worship Ministry Leader/Director agree in writing to extend it. Either party may end the employment early with four weeks’ written notice, or, at the church’s option, pay in lieu of that notice. The full terms will be set out in a written employment agreement signed before the start date. About two months before the end of the term, the Lead Pastor and the Worship Leader will meet to talk honestly about what comes next, whether that is a handover, an extension, or a different way of continuing to serve.
Qualities and qualifications
The right person is a mature follower of Jesus who loves congregational singing more than performance, and who can lead peers warmly without needing to be the most skilled musician on stage.
Agreement with Pilgrim’s statement of faith and willingness to take part in the life of the congregation during the term.
Competence leading from voice and at least one instrument (keys or guitar), with the ability to read chord charts and lead a band.
Comfort with Planning Center, or willingness to learn it quickly.
Reliability with deadlines, schedules and communication.
Theological discernment about lyrics, and teachability in receiving feedback.
Completion of Pilgrim’s safe church screening, including a police vulnerable sector check, since teams may include minors.
How to apply
Send a short cover letter, a résumé or summary of your music and ministry experience, a recording of a service you’ve led if available, and the names of two references (one a pastor) to [email protected].
Selected applicants will be invited for a coffee, followed by a paid Sunday leading worship with our team, with planning, rehearsal and the service all paid at the role’s rate. A final conversation with the hiring committee follows. Applications are reviewed as they arrive.
