We at the Sherman Church believe the Bible to be the only inspired, inerrant, authoritative written Word of God and we need a pastor who not only believes this, but also preaches, teaches, and lives by that Word.
We steadfastly believe in the power of prayer and are praying for a pastor with the heart of a Biblical shepherd, who will direct our flock by faithfully feeding us from God’s word.
We expect our future minister to invest time and prayer in preparing powerful, inspiring sermons that not only explain the text clearly but also connect to daily life in a way that touches experienced Christians as well as those that may be new to or have yet to come to faith in Christ.
He must preach Jesus, finding in Scripture new perspectives to enlighten us with the Good News of Christ. We seek someone who can preach to a fairly well-educated congregation, yet also has a tender heart to reach the little children in our midst.
He must be comfortable with a church that seamlessly combines both liturgy and laughter, dignified worship with close- knit family warmth and openness. He must be firm on essential evangelical doctrine, yet comfortable enough in his own convictions to serve a church that exercises considerable liberty on secondary issues.
We need a shepherd who lives out an evident love for all kinds of people within the congre- gation and also in our small, caring, rural community. Never losing sight of the flock, he is constantly thinking outside the walls of the church. He must show respect for irreligious people, motivated with compassion and
confidence to love them to the Truth. We pray our new Pastor will encourage, strengthen and inspire the congregation to also reach out in faith to bring the gospel to the unchurched.
As a reflection of God’s grace, he accepts people where they are, but he does not leave them there. Whether in small groups or one-to- one, he grows disciples of Jesus Christ. He not only leads, but trains leaders, so the church has an obvious Pathway of Discipleship – from seekers to believers, well-trained to serve through their own area of gifting.
Having a committed heartfelt delight in the glory, grace and grandeur of Christ our Savior and Lord, should be evidenced in a life of spiritual growth. The character traits for self and those for family in 1 Timothy 3 are essential.
The Sherman Church seeks a shepherd that has been cultivated from a sound theological education, but that also has matured in spirituality from years of ministry and from a daily walk of faith and humility. He must be, without question, a man of prayer.
We know no minister perfectly matches this profile all of the time, but we hope it tells you what we value. We are not a perfect congregation either. We accept that it all comes down to an imperfect pastor serving an imperfect church, and our desire to grow in grace together. What we do not want is a mere professional looking for a job. What we do want is a true pastor, heart and soul, who is ready, eager and committed to sharing, caring, teaching, and loving our congregation.
