Reporting to the Chaplain, this position will be responsible for the intake of and care for men entering the UGM Shelter by ensuring they have a safe and clean place to find direction, assistance and sleep. The job may include making referrals for housing, clothing, other shelter, recovery and a wide variety of other sundry duties as dictated by the needs of the individuals we serve. The work will be based out of the Hastings Facility; and from time to time the Shelter Worker may assist Outreach at other locations. You will frequently deal with clients in crisis situations, brought about by diverse problems. There will be other Programs staff nearby to assist as required.
This is an auxiliary (six-month), part-time (63 hrs bi-weekly) overnight position, which will work under an Averaging Agreement for a two-week rotation of 8:30pm – 6:00am shifts (Wednesday – Friday one week and Wednesday – Saturday the second week). This is a ministry position and a personal knowledge and experience of the saving work of Jesus Christ is a prerequisite. Strong interpersonal skills and at least 1-2 years of related work or volunteer experience is a requirement. In order to be successful in this position, you must be able to set healthy boundaries with demanding individuals and deal with people in crisis in an appropriate manner. The ability to function independently and frequently under pressure, while managing multiple concurrent tasks, is an ongoing expectation of this position. Basic English skills and basic computer skills are necessary to be successful in this role. Due to the location and nature of serving an all-male client base, only male applicants will be considered for this position.
This position will have unsupervised access to vulnerable adults or children. Therefore, the successful candidate must provide a current criminal record check that includes a vulnerable sector search as a condition of employment.
